The Willow Foundation is the only charity of its kind providing special days for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds throughout the UK. It was founded in 1999 by Bob and Megs Wilson as a lasting memorial to their daughter, Anna, who died of cancer aged 31. Bob Wilson is the former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper and TV presenter. The charity's name, Willow, stems from Anna's nickname and its aim is to replicate the positive impact special days had on both Anna and her family for other seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds throughout the UK.

My First Post

Hi  I hope you will enjoy my Blogg where I will keep you updated about 'Loki' my baby Barn Owl, and my photographic exploits.

I will also keep you informed of our Local Hawk & Owl Trust  (HOT) group ( South Gloucestershire) , where I am currently the Treasurer.

'Loki' hatched on the 17th June  to captive bred parents. He/she ( sex unknown at this time)is to be hand reared to be a hand tame inprinted owl for both my enjoyment and educational purposes for the HOT.

'Loki' is the name of a mischievous Norwegian god, I heard about on a recent Norwegian fjord Cruise we have returned from. I now have 2000 images to sort! (will let you know when they are uploaded onto my website with a link)

Imprinting is the term used to mean the owlet regards us (humans) as parents and is happy in our company. Parent reared chicks would not be happy to be near humans. Captive bred means that the parent birds were captive bred, i.e. bred in captivity; as was 'Loki'.
Captive bred birds are ringed with a closed ring at 12-14 days or so, this ring slides over their foot and becomes impossible to remove as the foot grows but slides freely on the bird identifying him but causing no harm. The bird is registered with the Independent Bird register, who issue a registration document giving details of owner, hatching date, parents, and ring number. This document is like a car registration document and is transferred with the bird should he ever be moved to a new owner. It is illegal to take any wild bird for captive use.

I am currently hand feeding him and keep him with me at all times (well nearly! ;-) ) so he becomes accustomed to humans, my cats, household noise and changing environments. He seem fairly laid back as he rules my movements and frightens the cats!

His large outside aviary is nearly complete as far as framework and needs netting, this will be finished over the next few days ( netting delivery) and weather permitting.

I will add a series if images and include notes on his progress over the next few days, then Blogg 2-3 times a week with images of his progress.
